Watch the video above then read
the instruction below which document
the actions taken in the video. The
video above is intended as a visual
indicator of where to go next, the
detail of the tutorial is contained
within the textual content of the
page below:
Brushes can range from the most
basic one pixel brush with a hard
edge to complex preset brushes that
give very dynamic effects. The video
above only demonstrates a few of the
brushes and draws basic swirls on
screen with these brushes, it is
highly recommended that you spend
some time playing around with these
brushes and experimenting for
yourself. Using some of the more
complex brushes can introduce subtle
effects that are available to artist
working with physical media (paint
on canvas) and sometimes lost in the
realm of digital media.
To start select
the Brushes Tool.
Once you have
the Brushes tool selected you
can paint/draw onto your image
with the foreground colour in
your colour selector. In the
option bar you can click on the
drop down menu to adjust the
brush you are using. Within the
dropdown menu you have the
option to either manually adjust
your brush or select a preset
brush. The manual adjustment
gives you the accuracy to select
the the exact Diameter of you
brush between 0 - 2500px and you
can also select the Hardness of
the edge between 0 - 100%, 0%
being the softest edge and 100%
being the hardest edge.
Once you have
the ability to select the colour
you wish to work with, the size
of the brush and the hardness of
the edge you have everything you
need to make a start.
Many more brush
options are available within the
Brush Palette but we will come
back to these in a subsequent
tutorial, but for now just play
with the preset brushed and
discover what they are capable
of. In my 10 years experience I
have rarely needed anything that
goes beyond the preset brushes.
