Adjust Canvas Size of Photoshop File/Document.

Watch the video above then read the instruction below which document the actions taken in the video. The video above is intended as a visual indicator of where to go next, the detail of the tutorial is contained within the textual content of the page below:

Often when working with an image you will require a little more room to work, the image may be just as you want it but you want to add text or if working with graphics the image is good but needs to expand beyond the confines of the current image dimensions. In the video above I have created a little more canvass to place a credit on the bottom of the image.

To start select: Image - Canvas Size.

On the image of Roundhay Lake I am happy with the composition of the image but I would like to add a credit at the bottom of the image. I do not want to overlay the text on the image so I am going to require a little bit more room, to gain more room I don't want to resize the image which would alter the composition, I need to add more canvas. This is a very simple function with a couple of nice options included, simply select Image - Canvas Size then the dialogue box above will be displayed.

In the simplest terms you can use the dimensions boxes to add new values and the amount specified will be added to the image canvas size. If you don't anchor your image in any direction then the additions canvas will be added in all direction (all sides of the image). In my case I simply want additional canvas at the bottom of my image so I am going to click on the top arrow which will anchor it at the top this means all additional canvas will go on the bottom. Your image can be anchored top to bottom, left to right or even diagonally depending upon where you want more space.

The extended canvass needs to given a colour and this can be assigned via the dropdown menu at the bottom of the dialogue box. The options within this dialogue box are:

  • Foreground (in colour selector)
  • Background
  • White
  • Black
  • Grey
  • Other

The "Other" options will take you directly to the Colour Selector facility that can normally be reched via the Colour Selector tool. Alternatively you can click on the colour swatch directly after the dropdown menu and be taken to the colour selector.

On my image I have used the text tool to add my name at the footer of the image obviously on your image you can use the additional space for whatever you want.
